I will never ever forget that day; I was listening to the radio (1580-KDAY) when the DJ as somber as hell announced that Marvin had been pronounced dead after an altercation with his father. I ran into the living room, (where my mom had company)jumping up and down telling her the news I had just heard about one of her favorite R&B/soul singers was killed. The fact that it was April 1st was reason for her to doubt me; 'Boy, stop playin! Just cause it's April Fools Day, don't mean that you can make cruel stuff like that up! Marvin aint dead, so stop makin that up....that aint funny!...' I swear on everything that I knew, but she still didn't believe me until I turned on the stereo in the living room. The mood was so somber. Pretty soon, my uncles and aunts were coming over to our house, some of them in tears. I couldn't understand why my elders would be so emotionally distraught over him. Years later, when I matured and learned to appreciate his contribution to Black music as well as his persona, I understood the pain of his passing. Marvin was to us as Elvis was to Rock & Roll. He was a crooner - ahead of his time. He was the embodiment of the outpouring of Black love.

When my mom explained to me the strained relationship Marvin had with his father, Marvin Sr. and how it lead to the incident that cost Marvin his life, I was devastated. Plus, the fact that it happened to take place the day before Marvin's birthday!

Years later, Spike Lee depicted the scene between the Gayes in his film 'Jungle Fever' (Ozzie Davis and Sam L. Jackson).

I often think about how devasted I would feel to hear of Stevie, Prince, or Frankie Beverly coming to such a horrible demise. Lord forbid.
