When HBO’s “The Wire” went off the air in 2008, viewers protested loudly that David Simon’s gritty, Baltimore-based crime drama went away without one Emmy win. Despite being celebrated in hindsight as one of the greatest TV series ever, the show only received modest ratings when it was on. But maybe the format didn’t quite translate for the small screen.
