When it comes to fashion and style Mos Def, the artist now known as Yasiin Bey, only offers one piece of advice: “Keep your clothes clean.” The rapper and actor breaks down his eclectic choice in wears in the latest issue of GQ magazine and makes no apologies for his seemingly disparate choice of threads.

“I like drawing connections between pieces and patterns that would make someone else think,’Those two things would never go together.'” he says of his leopard skin hat and his striped plum blazer. “Well, to me they do.”

Outside of recording a Trayvon Martin tribute with dead prez and studio time with Mannie Fresh, Bey has been quiet on the music front, but has been active on the tube (“Dexter”) and stage (“A Free Man Of Color.”) Yet he still finds time to consult with N.Y.C. shop Ale et Ange (where the jacket, shirt, hat, and pants he’s wearing come from).

“Hip-hop is the last true folk art,” he says. “I got involved with Ale et Ange because it represents hip-hop in a way that isn’t pandering. It’s nice to see something that’s elegant, skillful, and raw.”
