Pro featherweight boxer Orlando Cruz is finally living the life he’s always wanted. He has come out of the closet as a gay man. with his recent announcement, Cruz is officially the first openly gay man in boxing.

Orlando Cruz announced his sexual orientation in a prepared statement, “I have and will always be a proud Puerto Rican. I have always been and always will bea proud gay man.” Cruz’s statement was released just a week before National Coming Out Day which is October 11th. He said the reason he was coming out was because he wanted to be a role model for kids who might look up to him or may want to enter boxing as a professional career.

Orlando Cruz went pro a very short time after competing in the 2000 Olympic Games which were held in Sydney. Cruz was boxing long before he competed in the sport of boxing since he was seven. Orlando Cruz has won seven national boxing titles and seven international gold medals. he is slated to fight Jorge Pazos on October 19th in Florida.
