When producer J Dilla passed away in 2006 from complications of Lupus, the hip-hop and R&B worlds lost one of the most forward thinking talents it had ever seen.

Dilla’s work inspired musicians from all genres and ever since his death, there has been no shortage of tributes.

The most moving tribute had to come from Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, who adapted several of Dilla’s productions for an orchestra.  Ferguson’s finished arrangements were performed by the Suite For Ma Dukes Orchestra in Los Angeles in February 2009 as part of the “Timeless” concert series which also paid tribute to 1960’s Los Angeles based producer David Axelrod (whose work has been sampled by every one from DJ Shadow to Lil’ Wayne) and Brazilian musician Arthur Verocai (whose had his work sampled by Little Brother and Ludacris to name just two).  The performance was filmed and will be released on DVD on June 6th.

Here is the Suite For Ma Dukes Orchestra’s take on Slum Village’s “Untitled / Fantastic,” from 2000’s Fantastic Vol. 2.

And for comparison’s sake, here’s the original Slum Village song.
