During this year’s 14th Annual Urbanworld Film Festival hungry thespians, black filmmakers and fans gathered for an up close look at the top black indie films of the year. Each of the films in the festival held significant cultural relevance, but one of the most heartfelt and applauded films was clearly Ava DuVernay’s “I Will Follow.”

This first feature-length film for writer-director DuVernay (DuVernay is also one of the founders of HelloBeautiful.com) brings viewers on the journey of Maye (actress Salli Richardson-Whitfield) who is coping with the death of her aunt, Amanda Fisher, and brings renewed focus to the plight of cancer in the African American community. Along the journey, Richardson-Whitfield is joined by Omari Hardwick and Blair Underwood to tell an unpredictable and compelling story of loss and  triumph of the human spirit.

In the film’s first review, BET’s Clay Cane heaps praise on the picture, calling it “the true personification of dramatic filmmaking” and “the best film of 2010.”

Distribution plans for “I Will Follow” will soon be announced, so don’t miss this groundbreaking film.
