Name: B.J. Coleman

From: Washington, D.C.

Occupation: Communications and Image Specialist

How do you make beautiful people look even better? Ask B.J. Coleman. As the President of his own Coleman Entertainment Group, the Communications and Image Specialist has worked with some really big names in fashion and entertainment, including Naomi Campbell, Vivica Fox, and Kimora Lee Simmons, to name a few. But even with a hectic schedule and a growing client list, the PR executive still finds time to do things just because he loves to do them (i.e. starting a food blog). Working his way up from a cast member on BET’s Teen Summit, BJ tried a little bit of everything before landing in his current career. Now, he spends his days enjoying life, be it work or play. After all, life is what you make it, and B.J. makes his good.

Marcus Troy Stays Stylish & Global [EXCLUSIVE]

Tell me how you got started in the business?

How long is the interview though? (laughs). I’ve been in the business for 15, 16 years. I started out as a posse member on Teen Summit. I was on there every Saturday, ‘from ‘95-‘98. Went to college and studied communications. I thought I was going to be a talk show host. I did an internship with Queen Latifah. Then I interned for Kimora [Lee Simmons] in junior year. Senior year, she offered me a full time job as her assistant. After that, I started working on my own. I worked with Brittany Murphy. Then after Brittany Murphy, I was working with Naomi Campbell. Naomi gave me my first start in public relations. A lot of people associate me with Kimora, but with Naomi, I was traveling the world. So I was hanging out with Lenny Kravitz and Sean Penn. I was spending the night at Quincy Jones’ house. I saw the world with Naomi. And then Kimora saw me doing that and offered me a position at Baby Phat.

So just from hearing the names you mentioned and knowing you, you are certainly the person to talk to about style. Can you talk a little bit about grooming in particular?

Let me just say this. Grooming can make or break somebody. From your nails, how they are clean, to your haircut, dry lips, even clean shoes. Grooming is the finishing touch when it comes to enhancement. Grooming is the factor that you speak of when you talk about the difference between looking fabulous and being rough around the edges. Grooming is essential for style refinement.

Is there anyone whose style you truly admire?

Women’s fashion is completely inspiring and almost shines way more than men’s. I’m always in awe of Whitney Houston. I think she has always had the fashion, from then ‘til now. I love Rihanna. I like that she takes risks, that she is sophisticated, and that it’s effortless. In terms of men’s fashion though, I don’t really have any one in particular that I look to or admire. My personal style is contemporary intercontinental, and I don’t think anyone does it better than me.

I hear that! So let me rephrase and say, what men out there, from a fashion perspective, need your help?

I couldn’t tell you anyone that I would want to help. I don’t notice anyone who’s drib and drab. As far as whose fashion sense I respect, I love Usher. I think he’s very well put-together. You look at Jay-Z, he already has a sense of style. And that’s why they get my attention.

You stay sharp when it comes to your hair. What barber do you go to?

I won’t tell it. Everyone asks me weekly. If you’re lnot Djimon Honsou or if you are not a celeb in a dire situation, I can’t divulge that info. Everybody wants to know.

Give me your iPod playlist. I have a feeling this will be interesting.

Chris Brown’s “Look At Me Now,” Jay & Kanye’s “Ni**as in Paris,” Lil Wayne’s “6 Foot, 7 Foot,” Tony Toni Tone “If I Had No Loot,” K Ci and JoJo’s “All My Life,” Whitney Houston’s “Lover for Life,” Whitney Houston’s “Exhale… Shoop,” Beethoven’s “Symphony # 5,” Rossini’s “Barber of Seville Overture.”

I love that you can go from “Look At Me Now” to Beethoven’s 5th. What are some of your other hobbies?

Yes, I’m a man of the world. I’m extending my brand into blogging. I have a food blog, BurgersandBourbon.com. It’s a passion of mine. I’m big on anything good, and I love good food. Aside from pop culture, fashion and entertainment, I love writing. It comes naturally and easy for me. No magazine picked up my idea, so I just started it on my own. I take the readers on my daily diet routine. You can watch whatever I’m eating. I’m not gonna share an apple if I eat an apple, but I cover everything from Popeye’s to Mr. Chow to Panda Express. I’m like Zagat, It’s just a way for me to stay busy and to have some fun. I’ve been blessed in the sense that I can do what I love to do.
