Last night’s Grammy Awards had an odd tone to them. While artists were excited for their respective nominations and couldn’t wait to see the performances, the passing of Whitney Houston cast a somber tone to a usually wild night. LL Cool J, who was the first person to host the show in seven years, took the somber tone head on by opening the show with a prayer for Houston. Once he acknowledged their fallen sister, the party commenced.

The show was a tad lacking, but there were some standout moments. The Urban Daily live tweeted the show and had a great time interacting with our followers. If you aren’t following us on Twitter, step your game up. Here are some of the moments we loved and hated. Tell us if you agree or not. What other moments did you love or hate?

Moments We Loved:

Adele’s performance of “Rolling In The Deep”

Adele has one of the most powerful voices in music today. Fans couldn’t wait to hear her perform at the awards gala. However, viewers were waiting on pins and needles because Adele did just have throat surgery to remove a ruptured polyp on her vocal chords. Any and all doubt of the British songstress’ vocals not being at a hundred percent were dispelled when she sang the first two words. Easily the best performance of the night.

Jennifer Hudson’s Whitney Houston Tribute

I, like many, was hoping for a big blow out celebration for Whitney Houston at the Grammys. After all, she did have three of the best performances in their 54 years of doing the show. However, that couldn’t happen because Whitney died 24 hours before the telecast, which was planned down to the second for months. Jennifer Hudson stepped up and gave a heart wrenching performance of Whitney’s signature, “I Will Always Love You.” You could tell how agonizing singing the ballad was for Hudson. Holding back tears, Jennifer finished the song the way her idol would have wanted her to–with grace and poise.

LL Cool J

Despite looking like he stepped out of Driving Miss Daisy 2012, LL Cool J was an exceptional host. He kept the mood as upbeat as possible and knew when a segment needed to be serious. Plus, he is so New York! He called Paul McCartney his homeboy. Paul McCartney has been called a lot of things, but I bet ‘homeboy’ isn’t one of them. He was a great choice for a host after seven years.

Chris Brown

The Grammy Awards could’ve also been called Forgiving Chris Brown. Blacklisted from the awards since his altercation with Rihanna, Chris Brown had been nominated yet not invited to attend the show. Three years after the incident that caused Grammy show producers to scramble and find two replacement performances last minute, Breezy took home his first Grammy after performing twice. The funny thing about his acceptance speech, he had to apologize to the Grammy committee for the trouble he caused them on national television just like Justin Timberlake did when he won his Grammys after Nipplegate.

Alicia Keys & Bonnie Raitt Tribute Etta James

Etta James was a serious vocalist who inspired many. The Grammys had Alicia Keys and Bonnie Raitt sing Etta’s hit, “Sunday Kind of Love.” The duo sounded amazing. At first, I was a little put off Etta James was subjected to a tribute right before Keys and Raitt presented the next award. Then I thought, “At least she got one.” Still mad over the one they gave Teddy Pendergrass last year.

Moments We Hated:

Nicki Minaj

We all know Nicki Minaj is out there and things of that nature, but her performance was the definition of doing too much! First off, every song she performed weren’t her best. Secondly, she is simulating exorcisms on stage and that’s not cool in the slightest. Not because others have done it first, but because she is playing around with spirits and that is something not be toyed with. When Nicki gets to the pearly gates, Saint Peter is going to stop her like, “Weren’t you on the Grammys acting all possessed and stuff?! You know you are going straight to hell!”

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift being on this side of the list has absolutely nothing to do with Kanye West.  Taylor Swift’s performance was type wack. She was dressed like she came straight from a high school version of Newsies. On top of that, her whole “I can’t believe you picked me despite the fact you don’t know anybody else in the country category” schtick is getting ancient. I can’t take her and I don’t know what her appeal is. Middle America, explain yourselves.

Lil Wayne

Lil Wayne is an entity I can’t quite wrap my head around. What does Lil Wayne have to do with dance music? Why did David Guetta allow him to be apart of that set? What was Weezy saying? Was it in english? I mean the questions are endless! This is a terrible thing to say, but I miss the Lil Wayne that was high all the time and actually said words, instead of gibberish.

Victor Cruz

Before I say anything about Victor Cruz, I must give a shout out to my Giants, the Super Bowl Champs. Now on to Victor Cruz. First off, white shoes and a suit where the pants are two inches too short belong on a high schooler who is going to a prom he can’t afford. Then the salsa dance happened. Usually, I take no issue with Cruz’ salsa dancing. However, they way the white girl was up there like, “Come on and dance, Victor!” seemed a tad racist. Tell me it didn’t look like she wanted to say, “Dance, Coon, dance!”

Rihanna’s Performance

Rihanna looked gorgeous last night, as she always does. The staging and set up of her number was cool. Her voice is what destroyed the performance. Rihanna sings through her nose and because of that, her hitting the higher notes in “We Found Love” were ear splitting. I love Rihanna just as much as the next red blooded man with an eye for good looking women, but let’s call a spade a spade.  She is a pop star more for her image and attitude than singing ability. That’s cool. She should get in where she fits in, but don’t try to sing live when you know you won’t sound good.
