The NAACP began the Image Awards to highlight people of color who weren’t getting recognized for their achievements by mainstream media. Oh, how things have changed. For the past few years, white actors have been receiving nominations. What does that say about us? Did we choose not to acknowledge other black entertainers or is the NAACP Image Awards telecast that desperate for ratings they will nominate white entertainers to get their fan base to tune in? The Urban Daily decided to highlight five white actors who were nominated for ratings or any other reason. Check out our list. Do you think any of these nominees could have been replaced by other black nominees?

Bryce Dallas Howard

Bryce Dallas Howard was nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress for her work in The Help as the hateful Hilly Holbrook. I seriously believe  the only reason Howard was nominated was because Viola Davis’ character got to triumph over Hilly Holbrook. This NAACP nomination is a form of non-verbal communication saying, “We know publication characterized you as bitchy, so here’s an award nomination for your troubles.” Either way, she’s not winning, this is Octavia Spencer’s year.

Angelina Jolie

Oscar winner Angelina Jolie was nominated for a 2012 NAACP Image Award for directing In The Land of Blood and Honey. I’m not exactly sure how I feel about this. Was she nominated because of her actual directing merits or the fact she’s well on her way to adding a child from every African country to her tribe of children? Could this nomination be a prime example of the NAACP not really liking her work, but praying she would care enough to show up to the ceremony? I think so.

Sandra Bullock

Sandra Bullock received a nomination for her work in The Blindside. Though the film was decent, Sandra’s white savior role got her awards throughout 2010. NAACP was just grasping for relevance with Bullock’s nomination, especially when she was nominated against Gabourey Sidibe for Precious. Precious was the crowned black film of the year, so there was no way Sandra Bullock was walking away with that trophy. She did show respect by attending the ceremony, but I think that had more to do with buying adopting a black son.

Justin Timberlake

Nominated for his role in The Social Network, I swear Justin Timberlake got this nomination because the NAACP actually thought he was going to attend. Why they thought Timberlake would attend is beyond me. He likes to get rich off black music and culture, but doesn’t like to show his gratitude. Moreover, I still consider it a slap in the face to Janet Jackson anytime Justin gets nominated for anything having to do with black people. Janet is our Queen of Dance Pop and that fool took advantage. That’s an act of treason if I’ve ever heard one.

Emma Stone

The Help was the year’s sleeper hit. Unexpectedly, the film grossed over $100 million dollars and has been lauded for the acting. Though most would disagree, I think Emma Stone did a good job in the film. However, not enough to be nominated for an award made for black actors. She played a white woman who decided to write a book from the point of view of maids. So, the NAACP gave her a nomination for playing the white savior to black people in the movie? Enlighten me, someone. Anyone..
