The Pittsburgh Steelers have decided to release Hines Ward from his contract. The franchise’s president, Art Rooney II, posted the information on the team’s website on Wednesday. Ward was slated to make $4,000,000 for playing next season, however, it was rumored he wasn’t approached to take a pay cut as most of the players were.

“We had a conversation today with Hines Ward and informed him that we plan to release him of his contract prior to the start of the 2012 NFL calendar year. Hines has been an integral part of our success since we drafted him in 1998, and we will forever be grateful for what he has helped us achieve,” Rooney commented.

Hines Ward will leave the team a four time Pro Bowl selection and the 2006 Super Bowl MVP. his Steelers run ends with 1,000 catches, 12,o83 yards, and 85 receiving touchdowns. Ward assisted the Steelers win three AFC championships and a nice pair of Super Bowl rings.
