From its perch beside the Detroit River, the Motor City springs alive every summer with non-stop celebrations, live music, taste fests and family festivals. Detroiters have only two rules that apply to June through September: 1) Don’t waste the long days and hot nights, and 2) Never take the party indoors.

That’s why on Wednesday nights, the fun is on the patio at Flood’s Bar and Grille. A mainstay for the city’s professional crowd for nearly three decades, Flood’s is located in downtown’s historic Bricktown area, only a block away from the Greektown Casino. On Wednesdays, Detroiters get over the work-week hump with live music, dancing and networking. Proper attire required, business cards advised, catfish sandwich obligatory.

If patio schmoozing isn’t your game, there are the weekly concerts at Chene Park, Detroit’s waterfront amphitheater. The 6,000-seat venue allows fans to enjoy music beneath the shelter or on the lawn, making the most of the starlit evenings. Some fans even listen to the music from their boats on the Detroit River. This year, Chene Park’s “Heart of the Summer” series features soulful, jazzy Wednesday night performances. The line-up—perfect for a romantic, mid-week date—features award-winning acts like Alexander O’Neal, Alex Bugnon, Boney James, Angie Stone, and Gerald Albright.

The outdoor fun culminates with the Detroit Jazz Festival on Labor Day Weekend. This year marks the 33rd year of the festival, which spans two million square feet of downtown Detroit, from the riverfront to the design award-winning Campus Martius Park three blocks away. The acts at this year’s festival have garnered more than 200 Grammy nominations and awards. Where else can you see internationally acclaimed musicians Sonny Rollins, Pat Metheny, the Wynton Marsalis Quintet, the Wayne Shorter Quartet and Chick Corea for free?

Only this summer, only in the “D.”
