This past weekend saw Philadelphia being rocked by some of music’s most beloved artists at the Made In America Festival. One of the highlights was the reunion of Run-DMC. Another legendary group who got their start in the eighties was offered a spot on the festival but declined. Public Enemy‘s Chuck D confessed he was offered a spot at Made In America but turned it down because of his political beliefs.

Chuck D spoke to CBC.ca about the festival. Although he respects Jay-Z, who put the festival together, he turned down the offer to perform because he doesn’t feel like he was “made” in America. The “Fight the Power” wordsmith was quoted as saying, “I know I’m made in America but I’m really made on the planet. I’m not made by America, or in it. So, we like to protest and be difficult. But I salute them for bringing Rap music to the forefront and being able to have Run-DMC to get that slot.”
