Hurricane Sandy has devastated the tri-state area this past week. So much so that the ING sponsored New York City Marathon has been canceled for the first time in its 42 year history. The anticipated opening of the Brooklyn Nets season at the Barclays Center against the New York Knicks was derailed on Thursday (11/1), yet the following night the Knicks made their home debut at Madison Square Garden against the defending NBA champion Miami Heat. The Knicks made quick work of the Heat blowing them out 104-84 in front of a capacity crowd.

Emotions and tensions are still running high with the loss of life, property, electrical power and gas shortages taking its toll on everyone. Carmelo Anthony addressed this point in a poignant opening salute to the fans flanked by his teammates at center court thanking them for their support. After Melo put the microphone down, however, the show began. In a game many felt should not have been played, including Heat guard Dwyane Wade (who gave his entire game check to help the relief efforts), the Knicks gave New Yorkers something to cheer about.

The Knicks made 19 3-point field goals in the game which, according to the Elias Sports Bureau, is the most 3’s made by any team in a season opener. Melo poured in 30 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to power the new look Knicks who started a backcourt of Raymond Felton (in his second tour with the Knicks in three seasons) and the ageless Jason Kidd who showed no signs of slowing down as he continued to hit open shots. LeBron James led the way for the Heat with 23 points.
