Here we go with another retirement. Why can’t rappers just allow themselves to fall off naturally like the good old days? Since Jay-Z announced he was retiring after Vol.2 Hard Knock Life, then again after The Black Album (literally the Mike Jordan of rap) only to return a few years later, rappers have been calling it a career at the height of their success so much it has become a gimmick. Lil Wayne has become the latest to report he will hang up his microphone.
Speaking from experience you can never really quit Hip Hop cold turkey, especially when you are an international star (I never made it that far). Look at artists like Doug E. Fresh, Big Daddy Kane, LL Cool J, and Will Smith to name a few. Almost completely irrelevant to today’s Hip Hop generation, yet still selling out shows on nostalgia tours across the country.

Weezy will release the sequel to I Am Not A Human Being followed by the fifth installment of The Carter series sometime in the future. “Man, I’ve been rappin’ since I was 8 years old. I’m 30 now, man. That’s a long time, man”, Wayne told MTV.com’s Sway Calloway. Actually his illustrious career has spanned 19 years officially releasing his first album as an 11 year old.
Wayne has other interests outside the studio, most notably his love for skateboarding and then, of course, there is his TrukFit clothing line. “When I love to do something, I’m fully focused on it and it only. And music sometimes is not that ‘it,’ ” he said. Seeing that he is one of the rare crew leaders to have his own record label that is actually releasing relevant acts, I can’t see him giving up music forever. We shall see.
