Depending on who you ask, Philadelphia rapper Freeway is a rapper who has been slept on for his whole career. Others will say the only reason he was ever hot is because of the Jay-Z cosign. However, Freeway silenced a great deal of his critics with his fourth album Diamond In The Ruff. In an interview with SOHH, Freeway named The Roots’ in-house rhymeslinger Black Thought as the most slept on MC in the game.

Along with Black Thought, Freeway acknowledged Common, Mos Def, and Nas as underrated lyricists. He also said those artists plus the whole G.O.O.D. Music stable is bringing in a new wave of lyrically-based music. Freeway stated, “As far as other people, definitely Black Thought [is underrated]. He’s a monster. Everything that he’s put out is quality. Everything that he puts out is quality. Common is another one that’s crazy with the lyrics. Mos Def is another artist that’s definitely slept-on that’s got a lot of positive messages and lyrics and flow patterns in his music. There’s a lot of us out here in the music.”

“I feel like Hip Hop is coming back around with releasing the Nas Life Is Good album and then the Nas…and Scarface record that came out [DJ Khaled’s “Hip Hop”], then you have people like G.O.O.D. Music where Common and Kanye West are bringing real Hip Hop to the table,” he further explained.

Do you agree with Freeway’s assessment of today’s rappers and the state of today’s hip-hop? Sound off in the comments.
