One of New York City’s most popular mayors Ed Koch died early this morning. He was 88 years old.

Koch had been battling health issues for an extended period of time. The former mayor had recently been hospitalized for complications with one of his lungs. He landed in the hospital last September after a bout with anemia and he returned to the hospital in December for having pneumonia.

Many say Ed Koch is the man who revitalized New York City’s finances during his three terms of service as mayor from 1978-1989. Before he was running New York City, he served in the United States house of representatives from 1969 until 1977.

Ed Koch served as judge on “The People’s Court” from 1997 to 1999 when he stepped down from office.

Known for being straightforward and humorous, Koch made jokes about his take-no-prisoners attitude. “I’m the sort of person who will never get ulcers. Why? Because I say exactly what I think. I am the sort of person who might give other people ulcers.”

Several New York entertainers remembered the late Mayor on Twitter:

Ed Koch was never married and never had any children. A film on his life is expected to be released this year.
