Indeed, T.I. was born Clifford Joseph Harris Jr. on Sept. 25, 1980, in Atlanta, Georgia, and while he takes his name from his father, Clifford “Buddy” Harris, he was raised by his grandparents. The elder Clifford Harris lived in New York, where his son would sometimes visit.

Clifford Harris Jr. derived T.I. from “Tip,” a nickname he got from his great-grandfather, Kawan “KP” Prather, the man who’s credited with discovering his talent and signing him as a teenager to his first record deal. Out of respect for rapper Q-Tip, Harris changed his tag from Tip to T.I. in 2000, when he signed to LaFace Records.

Family is important T.I., and the Harris name lives on via his children. As fans of the Vh1 reality series “T.I. & Tiny, The Family Hustle” know, T.I. is married to Tameka “Tiny” Cottle, and he has six children—four sons, one daughter, and one stepdaughter. Their names are Clifford “King” Joseph Harris III, Major Philant Harris, Domani Uriah, Messiah Ya’Majesty, Deyjah Imani, and Zonnique Pullins.
