When Adele swept the Grammy Awards in 2012 with her now zillion selling album “21” we were in awe. Of course it was one of the best albums of the year and from the moment we heard “Rolling In The Deep” most knew it would go the distance. While Adele is still winning Grammys she is not the only game in town when it comes to bringing good music from across the “pond”. Artists like Corinne Bailey Rae, Estelle, and Marsha Ambrosius have been bringing a new level of soul singing to the urban music scene for a while. And now enter a whole new class of soul singers coming out of the U.K. with vocals blazing and enough soul to bring about a new school of R&B that would make Otis Redding proud. Meet three of the stand outs here.
If you have not heard the single “Alone Together” featuring Marsha Ambrosius, (another phenomenal product of the U.K.), please, please, PLEASE pick up your smart phone and look it up, and while you’re there check out the artist Daley in all his glory. This 23 year old singer, songwriter from Manchester, England sings with a falsetto that rivals Ms. Ambrosius on this soulful ballad. But that is just the beginning of what Daley can do, in June of 2012 he released an EP for download called “Those Who Wait”, that included original music as well as an acoustic cover of Maxwell’s “Pretty Wings”. Be ahead of the curve because this soul singer is set to blow up.
She has been praised by everybody from Alicia Keys to Adele, yet you don’t have a clue who she is! Singer/songwriter Emeli Sandé is the top selling artist in the U.K. (Adele still has worldwide sales on lock), with her album “Our Version of Events”. She released the single, “Next To Me” here in the U.S. but it was her single, “My Kinda Love” that gave us goose bumps and made us want to know more about this powerhouse artist. Through the magic of Google we were able to find more music including the funky “Heaven” and the soul stirring “Maybe”. These songs are just the tip of the iceberg and no doubt shows that Ms. Sandé is a force to be reckoned with… watch out Adele!
“Lost & Found” is the beautiful, haunting single released by Lianne La Havas almost two years ago. This 23-year-old songstress released the song from her EP by the same name. We came to know about her through YouTube buzz and this fascination has continued to grow into being enthralled by songs from her full-length album “Is Your Love Big Enough”. Lianne’s singing style is much more subdued than Emeli or Daley but just as unforgettable like the first time your heard Corrine Bailey Rae sing “Breatheless”. She has a vibe that envokes more of a sub soul feel but please know you will not be disappointed.
