R.I.P. AOL Music

All bad everything! Music journalists everywhere took a big gulp of air into their throats as reports began swarming the internets  that AOL Music had been closed down and all of their staff had been let go!

Says Mediabistro’s Fishbowl blog:

“AOL has shuttered its AOL Music division and laid off its staff, according to pink-slipped employees on Twitter.”

In a stunning sign -o-the times, Twitter suddenly lit up with tweets regarding the demise of AOL Music, but not from random site visitors. These Tweets were from the employees that are affected from the news of the closing down of the companies themselves.

Said, Spinner.com, a rock-music news site under the AOL Music banner;

“All of AOL Music is shutting down. Thank you all for your support. We had such a blast.

Said Dan Reilly, the site’s editor, on Twitter;

 “sitting in an HR meeting right now, trying to negotiate keeping our computers for a few more days.”

“Well, we all just got laid off. AOL Music is finished.”

“Well, at least I found a good reason to finish off the whiskey at my desk.”

Based on the Tweets coming out of those meetings, and the subsequent Tweets once those meetings were over, we think there must be  a lot of disillusioned journalists walking around right now. Both those who lost their jobs today, and those with jobs who are now wondering if it can happen to them on Monday the way it happened to their friends and colleagues today. Things just got real.

We think this last tweet of the day from AOL Radio sums it up the best;

“It’s a sad day here at @AOL. We’d like to say goodbye to our colleagues at @AOLMusic, @TheBootdotcom, @Noisecreep, @Spinner and @TheBoombox

We’ll keep our journalist brethren in our thoughts as they go through this moment.
