Oscar Grant’s Tragic Shooting Comes To Life In “Fruitvale Station” [TRAILER]

For anyone who thinks having a Black President means we live in a post-racial society, cases like Trayvon Martin and Oscar Grant are tragic reminders of the perils of being a young Black men in America.  “Fruitvale Station” the directing debut of filmmaker Ryan Coogler, follows the last day of Oscar Grant, who was shot and killed by a BART police officer New Year’s Day at the Fruitvale train station in Oakland, California four years ago.

The Oscar Grant story is very personal for Coogler, who is an Oakland native himself.  “I remember getting the call from one of my friends. It was horrifying, because he looked just like us, it could have happened to me.”

“Fruitvale Station” made a splash at this year’s prestigious Sundance Film Festival, winning both the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award for the tear-jerking drama.  Weinstein Films soon acquired the rights for a cool $2 million.
