Producer Mannie Fresh has helped create some of your favorite songs in hip-hop since the late ’90s. In an interview with Vlad TV, Mannie Fresh talked about the evolution of the producer in hip-hop music. Fresh also gave a little insight to the type of person another uber-popular producer was at the beginning of his career. Mannie Fresh talked about the first time he met Kanye West and how they’ve maintained a friendship over the years.

The former Cash Money boardsmith recalled a time when Kanye first came to the Cash Money offices trying to secure a deal. West was doing production work for an artist named Mikkey Halsted, who eventually signed to Cash Money, but was without any production equipment. Mannie Fresh lent him some equipment. West never forgot Fresh’s random act of kindness and will tell that story any time you ask him about it. “This was my first introduction to him. The only thing I could say is that it was a blessing because he came back and looked back. Without knowing him, I just felt like he was a good dude and lent him some equipment or whatever to do what he had to do and he never forgot about it,” Fresh stated.

After detailing the origin of their friendship, Mannie Fresh did explain the differences between them as producers. Fresh commented, “I’m better at being in a studio with somebody than sending them beats. That’s just not really my thing, but everybody’s so used to that, so that’s the standard. I’m more of like, ‘Hey, dude, let me get in the studio and let’s see what we come up with.'”
