“Make the money, don’t let it make you,” was a now classic line from the 1998 stripper film, “Players Club” directed by Ice Cube starring LisaRaye and the late Bernie Mac. It seems that all these years later the “Single Ladies” actress is back to offer more advice to the phalanx of clear heeled night laborers.
Around May of this year it was first announced that the artist formerly known as Diamond would be starring in a new strip club based film, “Lapdance,” directed by Craig Carter and co-produced by Datari Turner. Evidently the response was lukewarm and Turner recently released a statement to Shadow & Act defending the film:
“I think people would agree that I have pretty good taste and a strong track record in recent years with the indie films I’ve chosen to make. I believe “Lap Dance” is the greatest film ever made about the life of a stripper. People will be very entertained and pleasantly surprised.”
Well, given that “Flashdance,” “Showgirls,” “Striptease,” “Magic Mike” and the aforementioned “Players Club” are its main competition, the bar hasn’t been set very high. “Ladpance” tells the story of a woman who takes on stripping to help pay for her sick father’s medical bills, but (duh-duh-duh) something goes wrong. The ensemble cast includes Lynn Whitfield, Omari Hardwick, Carmen Electra, and LisaRaye’s former “Single Ladies” co-star Stacey Dash.
Turner was a producer on Meagan Good’s “Video Girl,” Common’s “Luv” and “Dysfunctional Friends,” if you are not familiar with his track record. Watch the clips from “Lapdance” below and let us know if this “Lapdance” will make the money, or make audiences head for the exit.
