“12 Years A Slave”, “Fruitvale Station” and “Lee Daniels’ The Butler” each received a whopping nine nominations from the Black Reel Awards. All three films are vying for Best Picture along with  the Jackie Robinson biopic “42” and “Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom.”

“The Best Man Holiday” walked away with three nominations – Best Actress (Nia Long), Best Director (Malcolm D. Lee) and Best Screenplay (Malcolm D. Lee).

For television, BET’s “Being Mary Jane” is up for five  nominations: Outstanding TV Movie or Miniseries, Outstanding Actress (Gabrielle Union), Outstanding Supporting Actor (Richard Brooks), Outstanding Director (Salim Akil) and Outstanding Screenplay (Mara Brock Akil).

VH1’s “CrazySexyCool” copped four nominations:  Outstanding TV Movie or miniseries, Outstanding Actress (Keke Palmer), Outstanding Director (Charles Stone III), and Outstanding Screenplay (Kate Lanier).

The Black Reel Awards annually spotlights the best African-American performances in theatrical, independent and television films. Founded in 2000 under the leadership of Tim Gordon andSabrina McNeal and based in the Nation’s Capital, The Black Reel Awards were created to annually honor African-Americans in the medium of film.
