Known for his witty wordplay and numerous college anecdotes in his music, many people would be surprised to find that St. John’s University grad J. Cole initially wanted to program computers for a living. The Fayetteville, NC native started off as a Computer Science major before switching to Communications. In a discussion with “Interview” magazine, Cole shared what made him want to take a more artistic approach to his career.

“I actually started off majoring in computer science, but I knew right away I wasn’t going to stay with it. It was because I had this one professor who was the loneliest, saddest man I’ve ever known. He was a programmer, and I knew that I didn’t want to do whatever he did. So after that, I switched to Communications. I took some dope-ass classes: Poetry, History of Music, History of Film. We watched all these movies that wound up getting nominated for Oscars, like Slumdog Millionaire.”

Successful rapper with a college degree? We can’t help but wonder why Cole would feel as though he let Nas down.
