What’s the sound you’re going for on this album? Will it be the same as “31 Minutes to Takeoff”?
My sound has definitely evolved since then. Music, as a whole, has evolved since then. My first album came out in 2010 and a song like “Cooler Than Me” was one of the first EDM driven pop songs at the time. That wave has sorta come and gone so this album is much more musical. There are a lot more live instruments on this. Also there are a lot more collaborations on this one. My first album, I wanted to make it by myself and I took pride in that. This album, I’ve opened myself up to collaborations a lot more. I’ve been very blessed that a lot of the artists I’ve produced and written for in the lady couple of years have returned the favors. Guys like 2 Chainz, Labyrinth, Justin Bieber will be on the album.
What was the first rap album you bought with your own money?
I was gifted Eve’s first album “Ruff Ryders’ First Lady.” I wasn’t allowed to buy it because of the parental advisory sticker, but an uncle gave it to me. I never heard the uncensored version, so I was like, “Wow! This is why it’s censored! I get it now!” [laughs] After that, I got into rappers like DMX and Mystikal. I dove head first into The Roots, J Dilla, Black Star, and Pharoah Monch.
What do you want fans to take away from your album?
Well, we always say three words on my team. Those three words are relate, live, and inspire. That’s my goal whether it be with a song, an album, a tweet, or anything we do. We’re looking to relate to people, love the people, and inspire them. I like said at the beginning of the “Top of the World” video, I feel like a kid from Detroit and if I can achieve my dreams, maybe yours aren’t as far away bad you think.
