Chic, the popular disco group from the ’70s whose hit song, “Good Times” proved to be one of the most sampled songs in music, will be featured on the net episode of TV One’s “Unsung.”
The group was formed by Nile Rodgersand Bernard Edwards in 1976 in New York City. Their original names were “The Boys” and “the Big Apple Band,” but they never had their big break It wasn’t until they changed their name to Chic and recorded the song, “Everybody Dance,” that they had a hit on their hands.
Under Atlantic Records they released their debut, self-titled album. The group felt they were missing something and decided to add a female singer to the group. In 1978, they released their sophomore album, “C’est Chic,” which featured the hit “Le Freak.” It became Atlantic’s (and parent company Warner Music) best selling album until Madonna‘s “Vogue.”
The single that birthed hip-hop, “Good Times,” was released from their third album, “Risqué,” and it was later sampled in numerous songs such as Sugarhill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delight,” Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust,” and Blondie’s “Rapture.”
Once disco died, so did Chic, but only briefly. he group broke up in the early 1980s, but Rodgers and Edwards continued to produce. The group has since gotten back together, and is now known as Chic featuring Nile Rodgers.
Chic is featured on tomorrow night’s “Unsung” episode. Watch a sneak peek below, and tune in to the full episode on Wednesday on TV One, at 10 p.m. EST.
