Where is Tessanne Chin from? Tessanne Chin is from Kingston, Jamaica, as fans of the NBC talent show “The Voice” are no doubt aware. Chin, a member of Team Adam — the group of singers coached by Adam Levine — won Season 5 of the hit reality show, and the reggae-fusion artist is now prepping the album that may finally break her in America. Back home in Jamaica, she’s already a star, thanks to hit singles like “Messenger” and “Hideaway.”

The question “where is Tessanne Chin from?” is one curious fans in other parts of the world have been asking for years, as she’s been turning heads and wowing people with her sweet voice since the mid-’00s. After fronting the Jamaican rock group Mile High, Tessanne joined up with reggae legend Jimmy Cliff and sang backup in his band for three years. After Chin was named winner of “The Voice,” her old boss called to offer his congrats, telling her, “Now the door (of opportunity) is open so I know you’re gonna take advantage of this open door,” according to the U.K. newspaper The Express.

While the answer to the question “where is Tessanne Chin from?” is “Kingston, Jamaica,” the singer spent part of her childhood in England, where she moved at the age of 12, and her music and personality have likely been shaped by her experiences across the Atlantic. Chin eventually made it back to her native country, though, and over the course of her career, she’s collaborated with such Jamaican superstars as Third World, Protoje, and Shaggy. The latter is actually to thank for her “Voice” victory, since he suggested she audition for the show and make a serious go of achieving the international success that had eluded her to that point.

“I have always dreamed big, and while I am proud of all my accomplishments in Jamaica, I have always wanted to make it internationally,” Chin told the Jamaica Observer, explaining — and perhaps defending — her decision to compete on the show. “The exposure I could get from The Voice would really be a foot in the door.”
