Where is Alicia Keys from? Alicia Keys is from New York City — the Manhattan neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen, specifically. Keys was born in the notorious area on January 25, 1981, and as a child, she studied music and dance, honing the skills that would make her one of the biggest names in R&B. When she was four, she appeared on “The Cosby Show,” and she signed her first record deal as a teenager. Keys made her name with 2001’s “Songs in A Minor,” a worldwide smash that spawned the hit singles “Fallin'” and “You Don’t Know My Name.” The album also earned her five Grammy Awards, and just like that, this NYC girl was on her way to becoming a global superstar.

Oddly enough, fans of Bob Dylan know where Alicia Keys is from, as he makes reference to the singer in his song “Thunder On the Mountain,” the leadoff track from his 2006 album “Modern Times.” “I was thinking ’bout Alicia Keys,” Dylan sings. “Couldn’t help from crying / When she was born in Hell’s Kitchen, I was living down the line.” That Dylan would namecheck Keys in song is a testament to her fame, and since “Sons in A Minor,” she’s released four mega-selling albums, the most recent of which, “Girl on Fire,” arrived in 2012. Keys has sold some 75 million records, according to reports, and with husband Swizz Beatz, she’s given birth to one child, Egypt.

Like many New York City natives, Alicia Keys has much love for her hometown, and one of her most famous performances came with Jay Z’s 2009 hit “Empire State of Mind.” Keys has collaborated with numerous rappers, among them Eve and Drake, and she’s also managed to stay popular among mainstream listeners not into hip-hop. Keys works both sides of the fence — she got her game down pat, just like any successful New Yorker.
