Where did J. Cole go to college? J. Cole attended St. John’s University, where he graduated magna cum laude with a degree in communications in 2007. When J. Cole first arrived at the famed college in Queens, New York, he planned to study computer science, but he changed up majors and eventually added business as a minor. His excellent academic performance is perhaps no surprise, as he came to the school with an academic scholarship, and in years since, he’s proved to be an excellent communicator and businessman. He’s released two chart-topping albums — “Cole World: The Sideline Story” (2011) and “Born Sinner” (2013) — and in early 2014, he announced the launch of his own Dreamville Records label.
J. Cole went to college in the Northeast, but as fans know, he was neither born nor raised in that part of the country. J. Cole hails from Frankfurt, West Germany, where he was born Jermaine Lamarr Cole on January 28 ,1985. His father was in the U.S. Army, and when Cole was eight months old, he moved to the States with his mother. They settled in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where Cole grew up excelling at both hip-hop and academics. He went to St. John’s University figuring New York City might give him a shot at stardom, and sure enough, his debut mixtape, “The Come Up,” found its way into the hands of Jay Z, who signed the young rhymer to his Roc Nation label.
While J. Cole fared extremely well at St. John’s University, earning a 3.8 GPA en route to that magna cum laude graduation, he’s not sure he retained everything he learned. Shortly before the release of “Born Sinner,” J. Cole told Hartford’s 93.7 that he wanted to go back to school.
“I was a student that got good grades, but I should’ve paid attention more,” Cole said, according to Radio.com. “I was really good at passing a test. I knew what I had to do to get the grade but I didn’t retain [the information]. I would get an A, but I probably couldn’t tell you what was on the test the next week.”
