Where is Ashanti from? Ashanti is from Glen Cove, New York, where she was born Ashanti Shequoiya Douglas on October 13, 1980. Growing up, Ashanti showed tremendous talent as a singer and dancer, and as a student at the Bernice Johnson Cultural Arts Center, the future R&B superstar studied jazz, tap, and hip-hop dancing, among other styles. She also proved herself as a budding actress, appearing as an extra in the films “Malcolm X” and “Who’s the Man?” and landing a more substantial role in the Disney TV film “Polly,” which starred Phylicia Rashad.

Ashanti has come a long way from her Glen Cove hometown, and in 2001, after linking up with producer Irv Gotti and his Murder Inc. stable, she sang on Big Pun’s hit “How We Rule.” She later lent her sweet vocals to Ja Rule’s “Always on Time” and Fat Joe’s “What’s Luv?” and both of those songs were on the charts as she dropped her debut album, a self-titled effort that topped the Billboard 200 and made her a huge star. The record featured the single “Foolish,” which hit No. 1 and remains the New York native’s biggest hit to date.

In the years since, Ashanti has dropped four studio albums, the most recent of which, “Braveheart,” arrived in 2014, ending a six-year hiatus. Ashanti has also expanded her film and TV work, appearing in flicks like “Bride and Prejudice” and “The Muppets’ Wizard of Oz” and on shows ranging from “Sabrina the Teen Witch” to “Law & Order: SVU.” As with many artists in her position, it’s not a question of where Ashanti is from, as she long ago transcended her hometown roots and established herself as a major star. It’s a question of where she’s going, and given that “Braveheart” hit No. 10 on the Billboard 200, it seems she’s still a fan favorite, even more than a decade after the string of hits that made her famous.
