Where is Juicy J from? Juicy J is from North Memphis, Tennessee, where he was born Jordan Houston on April 5, 1975. A key figure in Southern hip-hop history, Juicy began his career in the late ’90s, when he linked up with DJ Paul and began producing tracks for local Memphis rappers. What began as a loose collective became the Three 6 Mafia, and in 1995, the group released its debut album, “Mystic Stylez.” Juicy and Three 6 Mafia have gone on to release eight additional albums, the most recent of which, “Last 2 Walk,” arrived in 2008. By then, the Three 6 Mafia had risen to worldwide fame thanks to 2005’s “It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp,” a song they contributed to the film “Hustle & Flow.” The tune earned them an Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 78th Academy Awards, and just like that, Three 6 Mafia were a household name.

That Juicy J hails from North Memphis has never been a secret, and with what AllMusic describes as his “bass-heavy beats and haunting sounds,” Juicy J was instrumental in putting Southern rap on the map. Previously, New York and Los Angeles had hogged all the hip-hop glory, but thanks to groups like Three 6 Mafia and OutKast, that changed in the ’90s. In 2002, Juicy J released his debut album, “Chronicles of the Juice Man,” and in 2009, he returned with “Hustle Till I Die.” In 2013, the same year he rapped on pop star Katy Perry’s track “Dark Horse,” Juicy issued “Stay Trippy,” his first LP since distancing himself from the group that had made him famous. “Stay Trippy” peaked at No. 4 on the Billboard 200, proving that Juicy had plenty of solo star power.

That Juicy J hails from North Memphis perhaps makes his success all the more remarkable, as he didn’t just build his own name, but he helped put his region on the map.
