Where is Pharrell Williams from? Pharrell Williams is from Virginia Beach, Virginia, where he was born on April 5, 1973. Pharrell grew up playing keyboard and drums, and in the seventh grade, he met Chad Hugo, his future partner in the production duo the Neptunes. When Pharrell and Hugo started the Neptunes, it was more of an R&B group than a production outfit, but by ’94, they’d made the switch, and they went on work the boards on songs for Blackstreet, Mase, and N.O.R.E., among others. Their breakthrough came in 2001, when they produced Britney Spears’ chart-topping hit “I’m a Slave for You.” The song put them on the map, paving the way for Pharrell to eventually go solo and conquer the world with songs like “Happy,” as well as his pair of high-profile 2013 collaborations: Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” and Robin Thicke’s “Blurred Lines.”

Fans wondering where Pharrell is from might be surprised to learn he’s a Virginia native, as the state isn’t exactly known for its hip-hop. Then again, Pharrell is more than a single-genre artist. He’d produced hits for rappers, but he’s also worked with pop, rock, and funk artists, and as a founder of the group N.E.R.D., he’s explored just about every style of music under the sun. To date, he’s released two solo albums: 2004’s “In My Mind” and 2014’s “Girl.” The latter arrived after his massive success with “Get Lucky” and “Blurred Lines,” and the song “Happy,” from the “Despicable Me 2” soundtrack, earned him an oscar nomination.

Pharrell’s hometown of Virginia Beach, Virginia, may not be a musical mecca on par with New York City, Los Angeles, or Atlanta, but the city has spawned its share of superstars. In addition to Williams, the city has given us Pusha T and Timbaland, both of whom Pharrell has worked with. Then, who hasn’t he worked with?
