Where is Mariah Carey from? Mariah Carey is from Huntington, New York, a town located on Long Island, not far from NYC. She was born on March 27, 1970, and not surprisingly, she excelled at music from an early age. Her mother, Patricia, was a sometime opera singer and voice coach of white Irish descent, and while the elder Carey no doubt passed along some musical genes, she never pushed her talented little girl into classical music. Instead, Mariah — whose father was of African American and Venezuelan ancestry — gravitated toward pop and R&B, and after meeting record exec Tommy Mottola at an industry party, she inked a deal with Columbia Records. In 1990, she dropped her self-titled debut, an album that spawned four no. 1 singles, sold millions of copies, earned her a Grammy for Best New Artist, and made her the mega-giant world-conquering superstar she is today.

Mariah Carey has certainly come a long way from her days as a Long Island waitress with showbiz dreams, and she’s now among the richest and most famous women in music. She’s sold more than 63 million albums around the world, and in 2014, she’s still going strong, prepping the release of her 14th studio effort, “Me. I Am Mariah…the Elusive Chanteuse.” Mariah has also dabbled in film and television, and while her performance in 2001’s “Glitter” earned her some of the worst reviews of her career, critics praised her appearance in 2009’s “Precious,” and in 2012, she served as a judge on “American Idol.”

Geographically speaking, Mariah Carey’s hometown of Huntington, New York, isn’t tremendously far from the bright lights of New York City, but figuratively, it’s worlds away, and Carey has managed to make the leap from small-town Long Island girl to international superstar. Perhaps more importantly, she’s got a happy home life with husband Nick Cannon and and their two kids.
