Fox is dipping into the hip-hop mogul storyline pool again (anyone remember “Platinum”?) with Lee Daniels’ new show “Empire.” The series stars Terrence Howard, Taraji P. Henson, Jussie Smollett, Macy Gray, Malik Yoba and more.

Howard plays a gangster turned record exec named Lucious Lyon, who is running a label called Empire Entertainment. Lucious has found out that he has less than three years to live and must begin planning for the future. He has three sons, two of him are recording artists, all vying to be the new head of the label.

The major wrinkle is that his ex-wife Cookie Lyon, played by Taraji, has just been released from prison after serving 17 years for dealing drugs. Her ill gotten gains helped finance the label and she wants her cut of the company.

It sounds as if this illness doesn’t kill Lucious first, his family will. Watch the trailer to “Empire,” coming to Fox in late 2014 or early 2015.
