Ever since the successful PBS show “Reading Rainbow” was taken of the air in 2006, actor and host LeVar Burton has been tirelessly trying to bring it back to television. Well, he is about to achieve his dream thanks to his “Reading Rainbow” Kickstarter campaign. Burton, 57, intended to raise a million dollars by July 2nd, but that goal was smashed in 24 hours.

LeVar Burton was so passionate about bringing the show that made reading fun back to television because he believes every child should know how fun it is to escape in the pages of a good book. It was a lesson his mother taught him as a child and he hopes to continue to instill the same ideas in future generations of readers.

“It was my mother who taught me that, by picking up a book, I could ‘go anywhere’ and ‘be anything.’ Ever since Reading Rainbow began in 1983, I have dedicated myself to fostering a love of reading in children, just as my mother did for me,” the actor wrote on the Kickstarter page.

Burton is going above and beyond bringing the show back to television. He also wants to make “Reading Rainbow” available online for absolutely free for the children with access to the internet. As if that weren’t enough, LeVar Burton is also looking to create a classroom version of the program that will be made available to low-income schools at no cost to them.
