According to CNN, a legend in the world of radio has passed away. Casey Kasem died this morning at the age of 82.
Kemal Amin Kasem who was born in Detroit and began his radio career in Flint, MI before becoming an announcer on the Armed Forces Radio Korea Network in 1952. Upon his discharge Kasem worked at radio stations in California, Ohio and New York and then in 1970 he created his very own radio network called “American Top 40“. He hosted either that specific show or some version of it, off and on until 2004 when he turned the reigns over to Ryan Seacrest. One of the shows he most notably hosted was “Casey’s Top 40.”
Kasem’s children; Kerri, Mike and Julie released a statement via Kasem’s representative, Danny Deraney that said,
“Early this Father’s Day morning, our dad Casey Kasem passed away surrounded by family and friends. Even though we know he is in a better place and no longer suffering, we are heartbroken … The world will miss Casey Kasem, an incredible talent and humanitarian. We will miss our Dad.”
Kasem’s longtime friend, Gonzalo Venecia, and his younger brother, Mouner Kasem, were also with him when he died at St. Anthony’s Hospital in Gig Harbor, Washington, at 3:25 a.m. Sunday, a family member said.
Ryan Seacrest, released a statement saying ,
“It’s a sad day for the broadcasting community and for radio listeners around the world. When I was a kid, I would listen to Casey Kasem’s AT40 show every weekend, and dream about someday becoming a radio DJ. So when decades later I took over his AT40 countdown show, it was a surreal moment. Casey had a distinctive friendly on-air voice, and he was just as affable and nice if you had the privilege to be in his company. He’ll be greatly missed by all of us.”
Casey Kasem brought a much needed personal touch to the job of the radio DJ and it transcended all races. genders, creeds and orientations. He was a human being on the other side of the speakers versus just some guy throwing on record after record. Kasem made us feel like he cared about both his job and his listeners as well. Just that few extra seconds that he spent on each song gave us the idea that it was more than just music to him…because it was. He helped people make up, break up, propose, announce babies and mourn losses on his show with his request and dedication segment. And people world wide were moved by this at one point or another…we were all better for it.
This ends an era in radio that we are pretty sure will never come to pass again…so we salute not just the work..but the man. Job so amazingly well done sir.
The Urban Daily sends our thoughts and condolences to the family, friends, loved ones and fans of Casey Kasem and we vow to “Keep our feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars.”
