Rapper Common shocked some music fans when he released the aggressive track “Kingdom.” The song, which addresses the violence and murders that are currently taking place in his hometown of Chicago, is a stark depiction of what life is like as a person who is in the streets and also serves as a call to action for us to change the crabs in a barrel mentality a lot of Black people have.

After getting a lot of love for his Vince Staples collaboration, Common released a video where he talked about recording the somber track and how it all started from one little sample his longtime friend and producer No I.D. played for him while they were in the studio.

Check out the behind the scenes video clip and then if you haven’t gotten a chance to see the “Kingdom” video, you can watch that too. Make sure you go grab Common’s upcoming album “Nobody’s Smiling” featuring “Kingdom” when it drops July 22nd.
