According to Eben Gregory, there is a backlash against Aaron McGruder‘s new show “Black Jesus“. Conservative Christians are reportedly calling for a boycott of the show and its sponsors in an effort to stop the show from making it to the airwaves.

According to Adult SwimBlack Jesus is a half hour live-action scripted comedy series on Adult Swim from Aaron McGruder and Mike Clattenburg . The series finds Jesus living in present day Compton, CA on a daily mission to spread love and kindness throughout the neighborhood with the help of his small but loyal group of downtrodden followers.

One Million Moms, a conservative Christian activist organization, is none too happy with the show.  The group has called for a boycott of the show and its advertisers, blasting “Black Jesus” for making a “mockery of our Lord.” They write on their website,

“The foul language used in the trailer, including using the Lord’s name in vain, is disgusting. In addition, there is violence, gunfire and other inappropriate gestures which completely misrepresent Jesus. This is blasphemy!”

The controversy has also inspired Change.org petitions and Facebook community groups.

Take a look at the trailer in question below.

Pastor David A. Rodgers, a conservative Christian pastor in Illinois reportedly sent a message to Turner Broadcasting, the company behind Adult Swim that said,

“We, the Christian Community are vehemently opposed and violently offended at this upcoming program. There is no way that this show would be aimed at the Jewish or Muslim community. We are demanding an IMMEDIATE retraction of this show and a PUBLIC APOLOGY to the Christian Community at large.”

Rodgers says he plans to distribute his letter to “every church in America.”

The odd thing about all of the protesting and frustration over the show is…all of those taking part in it are making McGruder’s points for him. You can’t be a literal thinker and understand the depths in which Aaron McGruder writes from. He is making the point that people say they are Christians all day, every day and yet they don’t live the way their Savior would expect them to live. So much so in fact, that if Jesus were in our downtrodden neighborhoods today he wouldn’t be respected. Not even by those who call themselves his loyal followers. He would judged, cursed at, assaulted and maybe even worse.

McGruder’s ultimate point is that so many claim they follow Christ but very few demonstrate this to the rest of the world. Unfortunately, McGruder is also smart enough to know that if he doesn’t add shock value to the story then the entire message will be lost as no one will pay attention. There is always a reason for why Aaron does things the way that he does. He never claimed to be a saint..or even a role model. But we’ll say this…his deep thinking has forced people to take a long look at themselves. It’s been that way for years…and we don’t’ see that changing anytime soon.

Black Jesus is slated to premiere Thursday, August 7th, at 11p ET on Adult Swim.
