The hashtag #ICantBreathe was trending on Twitter and other social media sites as demonstrators took to the streets around the nation to protest the decision. The hashtag grew out of Garner’s plea for help as he was placed by in a chokehold by an officer on a sidewalk in Staten Island, N.Y., this summer. Garner could be heard on a viral video stating that he could not breathe as the officer subdued him using the chokehold, which had long been banned by the department.
