Michael Sam, the first NFL player to publicly come out as gay, is reportedly getting married to longtime love, Vito Cammisano, according to TMZ.

In college, Sam was already out to his University of Missouri Tigers team, and decided to go for the gold about his sexual orientation less than two weeks before the February 2014 NFL draft combine in Indianapolis, an event where draft prospects are tested by the 32 NFL teams.

Unfortunately for the 25-year-old athlete, his coming out as a gay player in the NFL reportedly may have jeopardized his playing career. Sam is currently a free agent after being cut by the St. Louis Rams last August and from the practice squad of the Dallas Cowboys last October.

Sam and Cammisano have been an item since their college days, when they both attended Mizzou. The pair became media fodder last year when they shared a hug and kiss (pictured) following the exciting news that Sam had been drafted by the Rams.

Last year, however, a story appeared in the New York Daily News that raised more than a few eyebrows about Sam’s significant other. Apparently Cammisano is the grandson of late Mafia boss William “The Rat” Cammisano, notorious for allegedly killing enemies and dumping their bodes in sewers.  The famed grandpapa was the boss of the Kansas City-based Civella crime family until his passing in 1995.

The young Cammisano, however, who graduated as a communications major, is seemingly walking the straight and narrow.

Meanwhile, the pair have been vacationing in Europe.
