Kanye West is familiar with aspiring emcees trying to catch his ear with off the cuff displays of their skills. On the 2010 track ‘Lord, Lord, Lord,’ West rapped, ‘Tell ‘em Plain Pat yo that track sucks / We ain’t dissing you / But you in the position to play something for us to listen to,’ in response to artists demoing material for him. Big Sean joined the ranks of G.O.O.D. Music at least partially because of his on the spot freestyle for Kanye West at a Detroit radio station. And while West was waiting for his car after a Big Sean concert in West Hollywood, aspiring L.A. rapper Cameron Grey seemingly attempted to be a recipient of the same treatment. As Grey attempted to hand West some of his music, the multiplatinum rapper told him, ‘Rap for me right now.’

Grey showcased some visibly nervous bars in front of West, Justin Bieber, and a crowd of onlookers before West asked him to follow up the performance with some of his written material. Kanye nodded along and even cracked a smile before reportedly telling Grey he needed to be willing to start at the bottom. You can view the video of Grey’s bars below.
