While some may still be upset that Ledisi got booted in favor of Beyonce to sing “Take My Hand, Precious Lord” at last night’s Grammy Awards, Queen Bey revealed in a behind-the-scenes video that singing the gospel meant way more than just the performance.

Beyonce, who took home four awards, used an all-male choir, and the decision was completely intentional. “I wanted to find real men that have lived, have struggled, cried and have a light and a spirit about them,” she said“I felt like this is an opportunity to show the strength and vulnerability in black men.”

She also recounted when she first heard the song when her mother, Tina Knowles, played it for her. “[Mahalia Jackson] sang the song with her eyes closed. She was a vessel and it was like God was speaking using her body to speak and to heal.” Watch Beyonce’s performance below.
