Today marks nine years since J Dilla passed, and the Hip-Hop world has been reflecting on the legacy of the late producer. Having just won a Grammy with Lalah Hathaway and Malcolm-Jamal Warner, Robert Glasper dropped a new song dedicated to Dilla called “Dillalude 3.” Okayplayer premiered the track which features Dilla’s Slum Village counterpart T3, and it will be on Glasper’s upcoming album ‘Live At Capital Records.’

Glasper also shared this story about meeting Dilla for the first time:

So when I met Dilla, the first thing I asked him was ‘Where’d you get “Still Shining?’” which was a song he did for Busta Rhymes, which is one of my favorite hip-hop beats of all time. Actually, it’s my favorite hip-hop beat of all time. He literally pulled out the record and showed me what he did and how he did it right there. He was a very sharing kinda dude, you know you asked him a question and he’d tell you exactly how he did it.

The celebration of Dilla’s life takes place throughout February, with his birthday being a few days ago on the 7th. An official tribute event was this past weekend in Miami, but there are other ones happening across the country like the upcoming Donuts Are Forever 9 party in Brooklyn.
