Oprah Winfrey might be one of the most important women in entertainment, so she’s definitely someone you don’t want to snub. But that’s just what Common did during the Oscars when he accidentally avoided giving her a high five, a snub that became the talk of the Internet. But Common says that wasn’t his intention at all.

“What happened was…You’re just so in the moment,” he said during an interview with Jimmy Kimmel Live. “I saw David Oyelowo first, and I was going to him.”

Common shared his thought process in that exact moment. “I was wondering if Oprah was really facing John. So I didn’t know if this high five was for me or for John, so I just went safe,” he added. He explained that he made sure to speak with Oprah the following day, and assured her that he wasn’t “trying to play” her out that way.

Common and John Legend have won several awards, including the Oscar and a Golden Globe, for “Glory,” their collaboration for the Selma soundtrack.
