Anthony Mason, a 13-year NBA veteran and longtime New York Knick, has died at the age of 48.

Earlier this month, Mason suffered a heart attack while being tested at the hospital for congestive heart failure, according to NBA insider Peter Vecsey. He underwent multiple heart surgeries before passing away. A Knicks spokesperson confirmed the news of Mason’s death to ESPN. Mason is survived by his sons Anthony Mason, Jr. and Antoine Mason, former and current college basketball players respectively themselves.

Mason was initially drafted in the third round of the 1988 NBA Draft by the Portland Trail Blazers. After being cut by the Blazers, he played a short stint in the CBA and USBL; Mason played for the Knicks for five years between 1991 and 1995. The 6’7″ power forward shared the court with Patrick Ewing and John Starks in a 1994 championship run that the Knicks lost in the seventh game to the Rockets. Mason also played for the Charlotte Hornets,  Miami Heat, and Milwaukee Bucks before retiring in 2003.

In 2000, Mason’s former coach and mentor Ken Fiedler described him in an interview with the Sun Sentinel. “He’s a self-motivator —that’s why he’s a pro,” Fiedler said shortly after Mason’s trade to Miami. “He practices hard, plays hard, runs hard. He’ll never dog it. In all my years, I’ve never seen a kid run and run and run like he does. You never see him stop running on the court.”
