While producing six tracks from Aaliyah’s One In A Million album and an additional four tracks on her self titled 2001 album—not to mention additional non-album collaboration—the general assumption is Timbaland spent a significant amount of time with Aaliyah. Apparently the bond remains even in Timbaland’s subconscious.

“I was riding home one day sleep,” Timbaland told an assembled crowd during he and Tink’s performance at the South by Southwest Fader Fort. “[Aaliyah] spoke to me in my sleep and said, ‘She’s the one,’” he added, pointing to his new protégé Tink.

The quotes, which were captured by Fader on Instagram, came as Tink debuted a new song that sampled Aaliyah’s single “One In A Million.”

Timbaland, Missy Elliott, Ginuwine, and Aaliyah spent time collaborating as “The Supafriends.” Timbaland in particular has been very protective of outside artists co-opting Aaliyah. He lashed out at the Lifetime biopic, Aaliyah: Princess Of R&B and wasn’t particularly pleased when posthumous, unreleased Chris Brown and Drake duets with Aaliyah were rumored to be in progress in 2012.

Since her death in 2001, Aaliyah has been sampled by the likes of Drake, Kendrick Lamar, and Tamar Braxton.

The full story, featuring additional videos of Timbaland and Tink is available at the Fader website. An Instagram video of Timbaland’s quotes can be viewed below.
