To say there is a perceived tension between the law enforcement community and minority communities would be a bit of an understatement. Aside from the high-profile deaths of Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, and Michael Brown, celebrities such as Q-Tip and Tony Yayo have expressed their displeasure with repeated incidents resulting in the deaths of unarmed black men. “Empire” actress Taraji P. Henson was added to that list when she withdrew her son, Marcel Henson, from USC after he was allegedly racially profiled. Friday afternoon, Henson took to Instagram to reveal she had change of heart after seeing dash cam footage of the incident.
“I would like to publicly apologize to the officer and the Glendale Police Department,” Henson wrote. “A mother’s job is not easy and neither is a police officer’s. Sometimes as humans we over react without gathering all of the facts. As a mother in this case I over reacted and for that I apologize. Thank you to that officer for being kind to my son.”
In a recent interview with Uptown magazine, Henson accused officers of illegally searching her son’s car and ticketing him under false pretense. She said the incident prompted a move from nearby USC to Howard University.
USC’s Public Safety Director John Thomasreleased a statement saying the matter would be investigated, and the video of the incident appears to be a routine traffic stop. You can view Henson’s Instagram post and a clip of the citation stop below.
