Less than a week after the shooting that took Coke Boys rapper Chinx’s life early on Sunday morning, police now say the murder is being investigated with an eye towards a possible connection to the murder of rapper Stack Bundles eight years ago.

According to the NY Daily News, New York Police Department Chief of Detectives Robert Boyce announced today that his department is considering the possibility that the two murders are connected.

“They were friends, Stack Bundles and Chinx,” Boyce said. “They were friends, so we’re looking at all hip-hop angles.”

Bundles, who was 24-years old and an up-and-coming star at the time of his death in June of 2007, was shot and killed in a still unsolved murder that also took place in Queens. At the time of that murder Chinx was incarcerated for robbery and crack cocaine.

Given the high-profile nature of Chinx’s murder earlier this week—his label boss and good friend French Montana as well as other rappers like Meek Mill have paid tribute on social media—NYPD Department Chief Robert Boyce added that police are treading especially carefully. “We certainly are,” he said when asked if the department is concerned with the “notoriety” of the incident. “There’s always the issue of retaliation in these things.”
