Actor Michael B. Jordan is acutely aware the Marvel character Johnny Storm was originally written as a white man with blonde hair and blue eyes. But after an increasing amount of backlash, he’s also apparently aware of some comic book fans’ wishes to not see a black man reprise the role as Marvel’s Human Torch in the upcoming reboot of The Fantastic Four. Jordan responded to who he referred to as “Internet trolls” in a brief essay for Entertainment Weekly.
“Some people may look at my casting as political correctness or an attempt to meet a racial quota, or as part of the year of ‘Black Film,’” Jordan wrote. “Or they could look at it as a creative choice by the director, Josh Trank, who is in an interracial relationship himself—a reflection of what a modern family looks like today.”
Jordan added that he personally received positive feedback from former president and chairman of Marvel Comics, Stan Lee. He also urged critics to “go outside and walk around” and see the casting was a reflection of how society looks. You can read Michael B. Jordan’s full essay at ew.com.
