It was supposed to be a sweep in the west, but the Houston Rockets managed to extend their postseason by forcing a game 5 on Monday. Last night’s game was close early on, but Houston suffered a collapse as some had predicted and the Golden State Warriors booked a ticket out of the Western conference. For the first time in 40 years, the team from Oakland is headed to the finals.

At the beginning things were looking good for Houston, but the second half would be their demise. James Harden went the third and fourth quarter without scoring and had a record 13 turnovers in an elimination game. The MVP candidate played very sloppy and failed his team when they needed him most. To make things worse, Lil B was at the game to watch Harden struggle firsthand. You could not make this up if you tried. Dwight Howard played well, but started throwing elbows like in game 4 and somehow was not ejected for this. Overall, it was an ugly way for the Rockets to go out.

Stephen Curry and team were able to survive the bruises from this and celebrate victory in the Western Conference Finals. For one person though, this was probably a bittersweet moment. Mark Jackson played a big role in turning the Warriors into championship material, and the team’s defeat last year was not his fault. He must have felt torn being a commentator in a series with a team he largely revived. Despite seemingly fighting tears on the air, he kept it classy and gave props to Steve Kerr for going the distance.

The finals are now a week away. The showdown between Golden State and Cleveland begins in Oakland on June 4th.
